The trend towards “Natural Wine” has been growing steadily
since the early 2000s when many like-minded growers, often outliers in their own regions, and mostly in France, began showing their wines to the open-minded young restaurateurs who were transforming the eating and drinking scene in Paris. Although there are no legal guidelines for this category, there are several “givens” that most in the trade now agree upon. There are some purists who insist that true natural wine must be made from pure unadulterated grape juice, with absolutely no additives, called “zero-zero.”
- Organically grown grapes (no chemical pesticides or herbicides)
- Hand-picked grapes only
- Only indigenous yeasts are used for the alcohol
fermentation
- No additives are used in the winemaking process
- Only minimal amounts of sulfites may be used to stabilize the wine (less than 35ppm for whites, less than 25ppm for reds)
We encourage this trend in the winemaking world as it has
clearly shaken things up and often brings out the very best in a winemaker. The wines can be controversial, but one cannot deny that they are fun to drink and clearly, they are interesting. The wines assembled here, in a truly unadulterated way, should give you a very clear snapshot of their provenance. The growers are truly passionate about bottling the essence of their terroir, which is what Beaune Imports is all about.
